About SAIL COMPASS

SAIL COMPASS is an abbreviation for Sprachlich Aktives Interkulturelles Lernen - COMputer ASSisted.
It is an online portal of the Language Centre of the University of Rostock that aims on supporting international students with their studies at the University of Rostock.

  • The presented E-Learning units are directed towards international students of different subjects. They try to raise awareness for (inter)cultural differences of study life.
  • SAIL COMPASS offers E-Learning units in German and English (Gebrauchsanweisung für die Universität Rostock & User Guide to the University of Rostock).

Background & Motivation

  • Dropout rate of German students is on average 20%, but of international students almost 50%.
  • HRK (German Rectors’ Conference) recommends to expand the foreign language online service of German Universities.
  • Results of HRK audit: recruitment of international students needs appropriate infrastructure and services, such as consultation and support to enable fast integration and successful studies.
  • Foreign students have great difficulties to orientate in the German study system.
